COVINGTON – A new school year is on the horizon and Newton County parents are heading out to buy school supplies.
School supplies can often ring up a pricey receipt, bringing anxiety to parents as they view their totals at the cash register. In order to get an estimate on how much school supplies cost for a local student, the Citizen took a trip to the Covington Walmart and bought the school supplies needed for a third-grade Flint Hill Elementary student.
With the exception of a backpack, the Citizen purchased all necessary supplies for a Flint Hill third-grader, coming to a total of $31.54. Backpacks at Walmart range from $8.88 to $29.88.
All of the supplies purchased were the cheapest available ones. However, if other brands are bought, the price of school supplies needed for a Flint Hill third-grader can go up to about $90 at the super center.
For the upcoming school year, Flint Hill third-grade students need a backpack, four packs of wide-ruled notebook paper, a 1- or 2-inch three-ring binder, 30 No. 2 pencils, one box of crayons or colored pencils, two family-sized boxes of tissues, one box of quart- or gallon-sized plastic bags, five folders, one pair of scissors, four composition books, four glue sticks, one container of hand sanitizer and one roll of paper towels.
The most expensive item purchased by the Citizen was the three-ring binder at $4.47. On the other hand, composition books and a pair of scissors were only 50 cents each.
Students must have their supplies by the first day of school on Aug. 1.
