CONYERS — The Explorers program with the Rockdale County Sheriffs’ Office will hold a fundraiser Saturday to help pay for the group’s trip to Savannah.
According to Deputy Shane Ballard, the 20 youngsters in the RCSO Explorer program plan to travel to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office in Savannah next week to compete with other Explorer Programs. Ballard said the local Explorers will showcase their skills in handling traffic stops and domestic violence incidents.
The fundraiser will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Southside Precinct located at 3552 Ga. Highway 20 SE, near Honey Creek subdivision. The event will feature bounce houses, a display of patrol vehicles, and a dunking booth for RCSO officers and possibly some local dignitaries. Funds will be raised through ticket sales for the dunking booth and through the sale of hot dog lunches. A raffle for an iPod will also be part of the festivities.
The RCSO Explorer Program offers youngsters ages 14 to 20 an opportunity to participate in activities that show them the multi-faceted responsibilities of being a law enforcement officer. Explorers learn skills such as fingerprinting and handcuffing and discuss criminal law. They also participate in scenarios such as how to deal with the public in traffic stops and domestic dispute calls, as well as how to clear buildings.
The program is taught by deputies and the only fee to participate is annual dues of $20, which can be waived due to inability to pay.
