Local baseball players grab a wood bat starting today

The Perfect Game World Wood Bat 16-under National Championship starts today and an assortment of local players will be participating.

Five area players will suit up for GBSA Sox when the Decatur-based team opens pool play with a doubleheader today at 9 a.m. against Team Rawlings Citius at Banneker High School and 4:30 p.m. against MAP Baseball at Newnan High School.

Salem rising senior Jason Howell and rising junior Akil Baddoo, along with rising Newton junior Mason Calloway and rising Heritage senior Isreal Zackery are joined by Covington native and rising senior at Redan High School Marquise Glenn on the GBSA roster.

A pair of Eastside players - Josh Sims and Austin Holloway - are a part of the Loganville-based Georgia Select team that opens its tournament at 9 a.m. at Alpharetta Post 201’s American Legion Field.

A trio of local players will suit up for the BigStix Gamers Cardinals (McDonough), including rising juniors Auliver Austin from Newton and Joshua Parnell from Heritage, and Alcovy’s Brock Carter. The Cardinals will play SC Shockwave at 2 p.m. at Kennesaw Mountain High School. The other BigStix Gamers team from McDonough, which includes Alcovy rising sophomore Logan Hinson, will open pool play against Richmond Braves 16-under National Mayers at 2 p.m. at McIntosh High School.

Conyers native Michael Davis, who will play his senior year at Piedmont Academy next spring, joins Chain Gold 16-under (Warner Robins) when they play a doubleheader today. Chain Gold begins pool play with an 8 a.m. game against South Florida Bandits Young Guns at Perfect Game Park South in Emerson, then plays a 4:30 p.m. game against Dallas Tigers Arias at Hunter Park in Douglasville.

Team Georgia 16-under Red, which includes Rockdale’s Jeff Sweat and Eastside’s Connor Hewell, opens pool play with a doubleheader at the East Cobb Complex in Marietta. Team Georgia Red plays Scorpions Jacksonville Underclass at 9 a.m., then Georgia Jackets 15-under at 11:30 a.m. Team Georgia 16-under Blue and Heritage rising junior Matt Studdard plays Evoshield Canes, the defending tournament champions, at 2 p.m. at Pinecrest Academy in Cumming.

Baseball Scoutz, a team based out of Evans, will open the tournament against Tampa, Florida-based All American Prospects West (11:30 a.m. at North Atlanta High School). The Scoutz roster includes rising Alcovy junior Quinton Grizzard. Salem’s Kevin Barham and his Home Plate Chilidogs team (Peachtree City) will take on Upstate Mavericks Scout Team at 11:30 a.m. at Whitewater High School.

Austin Richardson, a rising senior at Alcovy, plays for Team DeMarini Black, which takes on Elite Squad Prime at 11:30 a.m. at Mt. Pisgah High School. Eastside rising junior Chase Raines and Team Elite Silver, another team based out of Winder, will play Indiana Nitro 16-under at 2 p.m. at Berkmar High School.

Jaylen Turner, a Covington native and rising sophomore at Union Grove High School, will join McDonough-based OTC Baseball 16-under when they open with a doubleheader against Elite Squad TPX (11:30 a.m. at Old Cass High School in Cartersville) and against SCORE International 16-under (4:30 p.m. at Etowah High School). Mitchell Miller, another Covington native who attends Loganville and is committed to Mississippi State, will join Columbus Chain Grey when they open pool play against New York Nine at 4:30 p.m. at Campbell High School. Conyers native and rising Loganville High School sophomore Brady Abrahamsen and his teammates from Team Elite Prime (Winder) take on Louisiana Knights 16-under at 11:30 a.m. at Hillgrove High School. Team Elite stays at Hillgrove for a 4:30 p.m. game against South Florida Bandits Young Guns.

Pool play will turn through July 16 with the tournament playoffs beginning that day and running through July 18.
