NCSO: Son, wife accused of forging mother's checks

COVINGTON— A Covington man and his wife have been arrested on suspicion that they have forged his mother’s checks and stolen some of her money.

According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, a family member of the victim filed a report about a year ago, claiming that her 69-year-old mother was being taken advantage of by other family members, one of whom was her caretaker.

“Investigators began looking into the allegations and specifically began looking into financial records and bank statements,” said Sgt. Cortney Morrison.

Morrison said the investigator discovered that several checks written between 2009 and 2013 contained forged signatures and had been cashed by the suspects.

“Based on the evidence, the investigator had enough cause to issue warrants,” she said..

Craig Maynard, 44, and Sheila Maynard, 42, both of 100 Creek Bottom Drive, were arrested Thursday morning and charged with theft by taking and forgery in the second degree.
