Red Cross resumes operations after winter storm

Blood donations needed

CONYERS – The American Red Cross resumed some operations Thursday after the winter storm cleared its way through Georgia.

Communications program manager Kristen Stancil said blood donation centers opened at noon Thursday until 7 p.m. and were expected to resume regular hours today.

Since early January, the winter storms and freezing temperatures caused cancellations of 600 Red Cross blood drives and about 20,000 uncollected blood and platelet donations across the nation, Stancil said.

“Overall, 26 states and Washington, D.C., have had blood drives canceled because of weather,” Stancil said.

Rockdale and Newton residents have the opportunity to help the America Red Cross increase blood supplies by donating through the month of February.

The upcoming blood drives are:

• Rockdale Medical Center located at 1412 Milstead Ave. in Conyers, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 11;

• J.H. House Elementary School located at 2930 Ga. Highway 20 North in Conyers, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 12; and

• Oxford College located at 100 Hammill St. in Oxford, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 13.

Those willing to donate can call 800-RED-CROSS to schedule an appointment. A list of donation centers located in the Southern Blood Services Region can be found at www.redcrossblood.org/donation-centers/southern.
