Covington Elks Lodge holds local hoop competition

COVINGTON — The Covington Elks Lodge #1806 recently held a local Hoop Shoot contest for students in Newton County at Newton High School.

The students, ranging in ages 8–13 years of age, were invited to participate through their individual schools. The schools that participated this year were East Newton, Fairview, Newton County Theme School at Ficquett, Flint Hill, Live Oak, Livingston, Middle Ridge, Porterdale, Rocky Plains, and West Newton.

The Elks Lodge also provided many volunteers, in addition to local referee volunteers, Keith Costley and Scott Costley, according to Local Hoop Shoot Director Ray Edwards. Winners from the local school levels will be eligible to participate in the upcoming District Hoop Shoot to be held at the new facility at Newton High School.

Winners and their schools from each division are as follows:

8/9 year old: girls - first place Bailey Love (East Newton) and second place Kendyl Maddox (Live Oak); boys- first place Ja’Fari B. Law (Rocky Plains) and second place Andre Williams (Live Oak).

10/11 year old: girls - first place Iyesna Chapman (Live Oak) and second place Jashanti Collins (Livingston); boys - first place Cade Sadler (Livingston) and second place Trevon Scott (Live Oak).

12/13 year old boys: first place Christian Davis (Flint Hill) and second place Antonio Jenkins (Porterdale).
