“I am calling in to praise the Citizen today. A big ‘shout-out’ and ‘huge thank you’ for upping Mr. Meadors’ column to twice weekly! For years I have looked forward to getting the paper out of the driveway on Wednesday mornings, just to see what kind of wisdom he has to grace us with. He’s so full of knowledge! Just so you know, though, you’ve been labeling his new Sunday column incorrectly as ‘Citizen Poll.’ Instead, it should read, ‘By Jeff Meadors, education expert extraordinaire.’”

“More money is not the answer for public schools. Vouchers are the answer. Give parents and students their FTE dollars to get out of failing and crime-ridden local schools and into cyber, private, charter, virtual, home or any type of school they want. Put free market principles to work in public ed and see what happens. I know a lot of sweet teachers, but I get so sick of hearing them whine about taking work home. Everybody I know takes work home and works weekends and still pulls an eight- to 10-hour shift and have had no raises and does not get all these crazy holidays. Stop the whining. Stop the flow of money to K-12 and give parents and students more choice.”

“Only 10 of 98 Baxter employees moved to Newton County? I’m surprised that even these 10 moved to Newton County with the poor leadership from the chamber, elected officials and pitiful school system. Why would anyone want to move to one of the top five highest tax counties in Georgia?”

——

“Sounds like the CPD needs to do their jobs. Too much crime lately.”

——

“Crime is bad in my school and the counseling at Alcovy is the worst.”

——

“’Only 10 of the 89 Baxter International families who have relocated to work at the new manufacturing plant on the Newton/Walton county border have chosen to live in Covington.’ Who would choose to send their children to Newton County schools if you look at the lack of leadership of the school board? The two members who voted against Mrs. Fuhrey need to resign now and be replaced by someone whose goal is to improve our school system.”

——

“I saw a nice article by Mrs. Queen, I think, about the Chamber wondering why only 10 out of 98 Baxter families have chosen to live in Newton. Well, no one would choose to move to west Newton. The schools are bad and getting only worse. No one would choose anywhere in Alcovy either. Alcovy will suffer a long time from the leftovers of all the good teachers leaving during the previous principal. The whole county is Title I, so that sort of means that any awards the system gets are based on a slanted table of achievement. It is all based on small growth based on poverty not accelerated achievement. No parent would choose Newton schools when given the choice of Oconee or even Social Circle or private schools, and with all of the crime in Covington lately - where is the CPD? - then it is a no brainer. Bad schools and high crime do not attract newcomers and neither do McDonald’s on each corner and Dollar Generals and Tattoo You parlors all over. Sorry, it ain’t happening. 10 out of 98 is pretty bad.”

——

“So the BOC go into executive session to discuss creating an assistant county manager position, which will require additional tax funds, then immediately come out and vote on it without citizen comment or discussion. They even snuck it on the agenda so citizens wouldn’t have prior knowledge.”

——

“46 break-ins in Covington? Dang. I think Almond Turner needs to stay out of the school meetings and pay attention to local crime.”

——

“I’ve been trying to read a lot more in my spare time lately, and I think nothing beats reading some good ol’ American fiction authors. Mark Twain. Ernest Hemingway. Thomas Wolfe. John Steinbeck. William Faulkner. Jeff Meadors. Good stuff.”

——

“The Chamber should not wonder why most Baxter families are not coming to Newton. The schools are the worst anywhere around and Covington Police cannot even find a predator after nearly 50 infractions. Would you move here over other places? No, you would not. Look at places like Madison compared to the Covington area and why all these wanderers in the median of 278. This place has gotten plain nasty.”
