Covington man leads Rockdale deputies on high-speed chase into Monroe

CONYERS — A Covington man led Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office deputies on a high-speed chase last week from north Rockdale County, through Newton County before ultimately crashing in Monroe.

According to Investigator Michael Camp, an RCSO deputy attempted Thursday night to pull over the black Nissan Altima driven by Johnny Michael Herrington, 50, of 450 Ga. Highway 162, in connection with a traffic violation on Ga. Highway 138 North near Miller Bottom Road.

Camp said Herrington refused to pull over and attempted to outrun the deputy, traveling at speeds in excess of 100 mph. The high-speed chase, which began at 10:17 p.m. and ended 9 minutes later, continued through Rockdale and Newton counties, Walnut Grove in Walton County and into Monroe, where Herrington turned right onto Michael Etchison Road and then onto Ammons Bridge Road.

Camp said the car Herrington was driving was reported stolen out of Waycross. Herrington was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine, theft by receiving, possession and use of drug-related objects, fleeing and attempting elude, financial transaction card theft, driving with a suspended license and reckless driving.
