KCNB to kick off roadside clean-up series

COVINGTON — Spring cleaning begins early for Newton County.

Keep Covington/Newton Beautiful (KCNB) seeks volunteers to join board members for Spring Training, a series of roadside litter pick-ups starting Saturday, Jan. 25.

KCNB Board Chairperson Sara Vinson and Ginny Butcher, treasurer, will kick off the cleaning series at 9 a.m. Saturday at Covington YMCA Outdoor Center, located at 200 Stone Road, Oxford.

Volunteers will be given trash bags, gloves and vests; the group will then pick up litter along Ga. Highway 142 until 11 a.m.

Another group led by Kim Dylong will continue the Spring Training series from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Feb. 4, along Brown Bridge Road.

Alcovy Road is the next designated spot for the cleaning series on Tuesday, March 4, from 4 to 6 p.m.

More trash pick-up events will be posted on the KCNB website, www.kcnb.biz.

“We are excited that our board members want to get a jump on cleaning up litter!” said Laurie Riley, KCNB director. “We are planning for our big Great American Cleanup in March, but we know that this time of the year is traditionally the worst for litter, and we want to go ahead and get some volunteers out to pick it up now.”

Volunteers do not need to register or call to sign up but instead just show up at the designated location. Participants are encouraged to wear bright colors for roadside visibility.
