COVINGTON — An 18-year-old Covington man has been arrested and charged with raping a 14-year-old girl in his neighborhood, according to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.
Vachel Lavon Black of 10133 Settlers Grove Road was arrested Jan. 9 in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred in November.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the victim told the counselor and school resource officer at her middle school that her step-father told her on the day of the incident to go find her brother because he hadn’t come home when he was supposed to.
As she was walking down the street, she saw a friend walking with a man and they began talking.
“She said the man grabbed her by the wrist and took her to his house,” said NCSO Deputy Cortney Morrison.
Black reportedly began sexually assaulting the victim. Morrison said at some point, Black’s mother apparently came downstairs and saw the altercation. She allegedly told the victim to forget what happened there and to not tell anyone what happened, Morrison said.
The girl reported the alleged assault to her school counselor, who contacted the school resource officer. The allegations were turned over to the NCSO Criminal Investigation Division, which conducted a forensic interview, Morrison said. During that interview, the victim disclosed some information, which led to Black’s arrest. He has been charged with rape and aggravated child molestation.
