Eleven local players on all-region 2 softball team

Each of the three local softball teams in Region 2-AAAAAA qualified for the state tournament this past fall, and plenty of players from Alcovy, Newton and Rockdale were honored for their efforts when the all-Region 2 team was released.

Eleven players from the three schools were named all-region recipients, led by six first-teamers.

Region champion Alcovy had a trio of players on the first team, including left-handed pitcher Kalia Johnson, who had a 21-7 record on the mound and hit .386; catcher Morgan Beshears and outfielder Chelsea Nolley.

Rockdale had shortstop India Davis, a .556 hitter, and first baseman Kelsey Stewart (.444 average, .611 slugging percentage) make the first team, joining Newton’s Ciara Bryan.

Rockdale third baseman Sydney Driver, who hit .370 with a team-high 23 RBIs, headlined the second team, while Raven Smith of Alcovy and the Newton duo of pitcher Maddie Cronic and Bri Weaver were also second-team honorees.

Alcovy second baseman Waneshia Morris was an honorable mention selection.
