Hands On Newton County seeks volunteers for MLK service day

COVINGTON – As a way to honor the impact Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made, Hands On Newton plans to follow in his footsteps by dedicating a day to serve the community.

Newton High School Rams United group and Hands On, a nonprofit that links volunteers with projects, will gather food donations for Willing Helpers Food Pantry and winter clothes for those in need on Monday, Jan. 20.

Nonperishable foods are needed as well as gloves, hats, sweaters and scarves.

Hands On Program Director Mollie Melvin said the public is invited to not only give food items and clothing, but also join in sorting and distributing the donations.

Event organizers are also seeking volunteers with video cameras to participate in teams to conduct oral history interviews to capture and preserve stories of Newton County’s civil rights history.

The service day event will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20 at Solid Rock Baptist Church, 8111 Brown Bridge Road, Covington.

Those interested in participating can find more information at www.VolunteerMatch.org and searching Hands On Newton or by contacting Melvin at handsonnewton@yahoo.com or 770-330-7405.
