CONYERS — In support of recent Rockdale County high school graduates, the Rockdale County NAACP plans to host its annual Freedom Fund Banquet this month.
The proceeds from the event provide college scholarships to one senior at each high school within the county.
Allene Teasman, one of the event organizers, said the event proceeds allow for a $1,000 scholarship for each student to purchase books or other items needed for college.
“Because of the current economy we feel that there are so many children that want to go college but may not be able to pay it,” Teasman said. “Books are expensive. The money we raise can be used toward buying books, helping with clothing and trying to help the children and parents in a way that they really need it. It’s all about the youth and helping them to continue their education.”
The banquet will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 15 at the Georgia International Horse Park, located at 1996 Centennial Olympic Parkway in Conyers. The special speaker will be Rep. Dee Dawkins Haigler, D-Lithonia, and music will be provided by vocalist Nan C.
Tickets are $40 for adults and $20 for children 12 years old and under. Tickets can be purchased by calling the NAACP office at 770-860-4190, Allene Teasman at 770-715-4836 or Gladys Brown at 770-918-1349.
“The banquet is an opportunity for people to come together and receive a better understanding of the need to support the young people in the community,” said Deborah Anderson, spokeswoman for the event. “It also allows us to create funds in order to support their endeavors to further their education.”
