CONYERS – Rockdale County Public Schools, the Rotary Club of Conyers and the Rockdale Rotary Club recognized high school seniors and teachers for their accomplishments at a joint club meeting on Feb. 27 at Cameron Hall.

Each year, the Professional Association of Georgia Educators honors high school seniors, and a teacher that each one has selected, with the Student Teacher Achievement Recognition. In order to obtain the STAR award, high school seniors must have the highest SAT score and be in the top 10 percent of their graduating class based on grade point average.

Ellen Dement was named the STAR student for Heritage High’s class of 2014, and she chose her Heritage teacher James Hauk as the instructor who has inspired her the most. Dement was also named as the STAR student for all of Rockdale County.

“We are very proud of Ellen Dement and Mr. James Hauk and the academic excellence they exemplify at Heritage High School,” said Conyers Rotary Club Youth Chair Diane Adoma in a released statement.

For Rockdale County High, Benjamin Smart was recognized as this year’s STAR student. Smart selected his teacher Master Sgt. Timothy Harris as his inspirational educator. Salem High’s 2014 STAR student was Sarah Jawar, who chose Mike Head as the teacher she felt had an impact on her academic career. Carson Norwood was chosen as Rockdale Magnet’s STAR student for this school year, and she selected her teacher Diana Kinnon as her influential instructor.

Working in collaboration with Bank of North Georgia, the Rotary Clubs celebrated the STAR program’s 57th year running. More than 24,000 high school seniors and teachers have been recognized by the STAR program since it was established.
