Salem, Tucker get together on hardwood

The girls basketball teams from Salem and Tucker had to wait one more day for their rematch. The Class AAAAA quartefinal game, orginially scheduled for Wednesday, will tip off tonight at 6 pm at Tucker High School.

Salem (25-3) and Tucker (26-4), a pair of No. 2 seeds, will be meeting for the first time since the Tigers won 53-42 in the second round last February in Conyers.

“We’re ready for the rematch,” Salem junior Ayanna Mitchell said after the Seminoles’ second round win over Kell. “That’s the game we’ve been looking for.”

While Tucker is in its third elite 8 since 2004, Salem is playing past the second round for the first time in school history.

Pats knock off defending champs on diamond

Lovett came into Tuesday’s game at Heritage as the defending state champions in Class AA and with a pair of wins already under its belt in 2014. That didn’t seem to matter much to the host Patriots.

Tyler Holcombe allowed two runs over 4 2/3 innings of work and Heritage won 9-4 in a Dugout Club Tournament game at Danny Blue Field.

Heritage, which was coming off a 4-2 victory over Alcovy Monday, improved to 3-2 on the young season. Lovett, an Atlanta school, has been to six consecutive final fours, also winning the state crown in 2009.

The Patriots travel across town to take on county rival Rockdale Friday at 5:30 p.m.
