The Heritage girls soccer team got its season off to a fine start Tuesday. Sara Boggus scored four goals and Kaley Wells added two goals and two assists in the Patriots’ 10-0 win over rival Rockdale at Reid Stadium.
Heritage, which is trying to get back to the state playoffs for the seventh consecutive season, also got a goal and two assists from Faith Shelton and a goal and assist from Kennesaw State signee Mady Carter.
“Really pleased with the work rate and speed of play (Tuesday),” said Heritage coach Chad Suddeth. “Nice to get the season off to a good start, especially against a local rival.”
Wells’ helpers moved her into sixth place on the program’s all-time assist list with 24, while freshman goalkeeper Kylie Kersh saved Rockdale’s only shot on goal to pick up her first career win.
The Eastside girls also picked up a win in their season opener Tuesday. Becka McKelvey’s first career goal midway through the second half turned out to be the game-winner in the Eagles’ 3-1 victory over Monticello at Homer Sharp Stadium.
Alex Morvik had given Eastside a 1-0 lead, but the Eagles’ knocked the ball into their own net to allow Monticello to get the equalizer late in the opening half. Alyssa Banks added an insurance goal in the second half for Eastside, which plays county rival Alcovy next Tuesday at Homer Sharp.
