COVINGTON — The Kroger on U.S. Highway 278 in Covington was evacuated Tuesday afternoon when a man reportedly doused himself with alcohol and set himself on fire.
According to Tony Smith, deputy fire chief with the Covington Fire Department, officers with the Covington Police Department were called to the grocery store just after 4:30 p.m. because a man was seen taking rubbing alcohol off the shelves and pouring it on the floor throughout the store.
“When the police approached the man, he doused himself in the alcohol and before they could get to him, the man lit himself on fire with a lighter he had,” Smith said.
Police were able to extinguish the fire quickly, and the store was evacuated, he said.
The Fire Department was called in to assist with clean-up and the medical needs of the man. Smith said it appears he suffered second-degree burns.
