Region basketball tournaments moved to Friday and Saturday

State wrestling to go on as scheduled

COVINGTON — The Georgia High School Association has moved the date for the first round of the basketball playoffs to give regions a chance to finish their tournaments due to the ice and snow storm moving through the state.

According to the GHSA website, the first round of the girls basketball tournament will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 19, with the boys starting on Thursday, Feb. 20. The revised schedule should allow regions affected by the weather, to complete their region tournament on Monday, Feb. 17.

Eastside’s Region 8-AAAA tournament is scheduled to continue on Friday and Saturday with the championship game scheduled for Monday at Lanier

However, because of the severe conditions the GHSA will allow regions will have the option to schedule teams to play two games in a single day providing there is a 4-hour interval between the scheduling of the games if teams are unavailable to play Friday.

If Friday play is not permitted in the Region 8-AAAA tournament, the all-day Saturday Region 8-AAAA tournament will begin at 9 a.m. with the Eastside boys playing at approximately 1:30 p.m. A win would pit the Eagles, who are the Class AAAA No. 8 ranked team according to the MaxPreps Freeman rankings, against the winner of the Madison County/ Walnut Grove winner at 8:30 p.m. in the semifinals with the finals scheduled for Monday.

The Lady Eagles, who beat No. 3 seed Lumpkin County 46-42 on Monday, will take on No. 2 seed Walnut Grove in the semifinal game at 3 p.m. The Eastside girls swept their last two meetings beating the Lady Warriors 57-49 and 68-42.

The finals for the Region 8-AAAA will be played on Monday regardless of tournament play.

The Region 2-AAAAAA tournament, which was to be held at Newton, is considering several options with everything postponed until Friday at the earliest.

One option under consideration is to use two separate sites with the boys playing their tournament at Newton. The location for the girls site is still under discussion with Luella, Alcovy and Rockdale under consideration.

If Friday play is unavailable, then the boys and girls quarterfinals will be played at Newton on Saturday with the semifinals played on Monday and the finals on Tuesday.

The Region 8-AAAAA tournament for Salem and Heritage is scheduled to move to Apalachee starting at 7 p.m. on Friday, weather permitting, before returning to Loganville for the remainder of the tournament.

WRESTLING

The Class AAAA-AAAAAA 2014 State Traditional Wrestling Tournament is still being held at the Arena at Gwinnett with weigh-ins beginning at 6 a.m. on Friday and first round action starting at 9 a.m. going through the consolation quarterfinals.

Wrestling will begin on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the championship semifinals followed by the consolation semifinals and finals.

The championship finals are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Saturday and should last until 8:30 p.m.

In a statement on the GHSA wrestling page, www.ghsa.net/inclement-weather-announcement, it states that “we know that you are all dealing with the challenges the weather situation has created. This has also presented some difficult challenges for the GHSA as well and we are working on several plans. We will base our decisions concerning the state wrestling tournament on the most up-to-date and accurate information possible while keeping in mind the safety of the student athletes and those involved with the sport.”
