Eastside girls win first round of region tournament, other games on hold

COVINGTON — With region basketball out of the way which set up the seeding for the tournament, the important part season in under way.

In Monday’s game, the Lady Eagles, who were the No. 5 seed, beat No. 4 seed Lumpkin County 46-42 in a back and forth game. The Eastside girls led by as many as eight points at one time before the Lady Indians chopped into the lead.

The Eastside team will take on the winner of the No. 1 seed Chestatee Lady War Eagles and No. 8 seed Monroe Area Lady Hurricanes.

Newton will host the Region 2-AAAAAA tournament while Salem and Heritage travel to Loganville for Region 8-AAAAA action with Eastside going north to Lanier for the 8-AAAA tournament.

In the boys tournament, the No. 5 seed from Region 2-AAAAAA, Rockdale, will play No. 4 seed Morrow at 4 p.m. with No. 3 seed Newton facing No. 6 seed and county rival Alcovy at 6 p.m.

The winner of the Rockdale/Morrow game will play No. 1 seed Luella at 8:30 p.m. on Friday with the winner of the Newton/Alcovy game playing the winner of the No. 2 seed Lovejoy/No. 7 seed Druid Hills at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Heritage and Salem were scheduled to face each other today at 5:30 p.m. in Region 8-AAAAA action at Loganville. But due to weather concerns the Region 8-AAAAA tournament will be played at a later date. Once the tournament gets under way, the winner will go up against the winner of the Loganville/Apalachee game.

Eastside, the No. 1 seed from Region 8-AAAA, will play the winner of the play-in game between Monroe Area and Chestatee once tournament play for the boys on Thursday. With school cancelled in Lanier County and Chestatee, the boys tournament will be pushed back.

In the girls Region 2-AAAAAA tournament, as a result of their No. 1 seed, winning the regular region play with a perfect 12-0 record, the Lady Rams are automatically in the Class AAAAAA playoffs. They will make their bid for the region championship when they play the winner of the Lovejoy/Alcovy game. Rockdale, who is No. 3 in the region seeding, will play No. 6 Morrow with the winner playing the winner of the Luella/Druid Hills game.

The Lady Seminoles, who is the No. 1 seed for Region 8-AAAAA and finished with a 16-0 region record, will play the winner of the Heritage/Apalachee game. The winner of the Salem game will take on the winner of the Loganville/Flowery Branch game.

The loser of the quarterfinal round will be eliminated from the state playoffs.
