18-year-old arrested in connection with two separate shootings

COVINGTON — The teenager believed to have fired a gun during a confrontation with another teen last fall has been arrested and charged with participating in gang activity.

Vernon Levell King, 18, of 225 Riverbrooke Road, was arrested Tuesday and charged with disorderly conduct, criminal trespass, participation in criminal gang activity, pointing or aiming a gun at another and discharge of firearms on the property of another.

King was arrested in connection with an incident that occurred Sept. 27 when a group of about five men pulled up to a home on Mote Road and confronted a 16-year-old and said they wanted to fight him, Newton County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Felicia Jefferson said.

“The victim said the group wanted to fight him because of statements he allegedly made about a female. The victim said he didn’t want to fight, and when the victim’s mother came outside, she asked the males to leave,” Jefferson said.

As the group was walking backward down the driveway, one of the men, later identified as King, fired a gun in the air, she said.

Eighteen-year-old Aquelle Tajh Crawlle of 6136 Clane Drive was arrested in October in connection with the incident and charged with participation in criminal gang activity, disorderly conduct and criminal trespass.

King was also charged Tuesday with armed robbery in connection with the shooting of another 16-year-old man in November.

Deputies were called to the pool area on Gross Lake Parkway around 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 23 where they found the juvenile lying on the ground from being shot in the lower back and left leg after an apparent drug transaction turned bad, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The teen was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment.

Since then, four arrests in the case have been made. In addition to King, Nickolis Devante Howard, 18, of 300 Forest Brook Drive, was arrested Dec. 3 and charged with aggravated assault, possession of firearm during the commission of crime, making false statements to police and violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act.

Lucky Benhur Huynh, 18, of 5117 Newton Drive was arrested Jan. 4 and charged with armed robbery and making false statements to law enforcement; and 19-year-old Steven Robert Dabney of 40 Papa’s Talk, Social Circle, was arrested Wednesday and charged with armed robbery and making false statements.
