Rockdale got 14 points and 10 rebounds from Darryl Tucker and eight of Conner Ferrell’s 12 points in the fourth quarter to hang on for a 62-56 victory over Alcovy Tuesday at Stroud Gymnasium.
The game was tied at 56-56 on a put back by Alcovy’s Glendale Hodge with 2:37 left in the final period. Alcovy wouldn’t score again. Ferrell made 1 of 2 free throws and Tucker had a steal and assist on a lay up by Jalen Jordan in transition that made it a 59-56 game with 2:12 to go.
The visiting Tigers had a chance to get closer, but Davonte Long missed the front end of a one-and-one, and after Long stole a pass LaReco Herring missed a potential tying 3-pointer with 1:08 left.
The third quarter belonged to Alcovy. Rockdale went up 39-26 on a bucket by Tucker, but the hosts spent the next 6 1/2 minutes scoreless. Meanwhile, Cameron Banks had five of his game-high 20 points and Greg Perry added four during a 13-0 spurt that pulled the Covington school even at 39-39 at the 1:40 mark of the period.
It was tied twice more over the next five minutes, including when Jordan Heron’s lay up tied things at 50-50 with 4:30 to go in the game.
Shortly after Rockdale inbounded the ball, the power went out inside the arena, delaying the game 14 minutes.
Rockdale grabbed a 56-52 lead when Ferrell was fouled while knocking down a jumper, missed the free throw and Tucker put back the miss.
Herring hit a basket before Hodge’s put back tied the game for the fifth and final time.
