COVINGTON – The Newton County School System has announced that 608 pre-k slots will be available at all 13 Newton elementary schools for the 2014-15 school year; registration dates are Feb. 24-28.
Parents should register children at their zoned elementary school that they will be attending the following year. Only custodial parents and legal guardians may register a child for pre-k classes. Registration does not guarantee a slot in the pre-k program, and children will not be placed on the roster for possible selection until all required documents have been submitted.
To be eligible for enrollment, children must be at least 4 years of age on or before Sept. 1, 2014. Parents must provide a certified birth certificate and two proofs of residence. One document from each of the following categories will be considered as valid proof of residence:
- Category 1: electric, gas, water or garbage bill in the name of the person enrolling the child
- Category 2: current lease, rental agreement or mortgage statement from the purchase or leasing of a home
Documents such as telephone bills, mortgage payment books, post office addresses, credit cards, drivers licenses and Medicaid cards will not be accepted as proof of residence. Guardianship or custody documents must be presented if the applying child does not live with one or both parents. If the child and parents/guardians live with someone else and do not have have a proof of address in his or her name as a result, a signed and notarized Statement of Legal Residence/Affidavit of Parent/Guardian is needed, along with two of the aforementioned proofs of residence in the name of the person who owns the property. Affidavits can be obtained from any elementary school or the Newton County Board Office, and a free notary will be available at registration. Should parents/guardians choose to have their documents notarized by the notary at registration, the owner of the property must be present with the two proofs of residence described above.
Along with their child’s birth certificate and proofs of residence, parents/guardians must provide the child’s Social Security card; Eye, Ear, Dental Screening Form #3300 if the child has already reached age 4 and Immunization Record Form #3231. These forms can be obtained by a physician or the Newton County Health Department. A waiver may be signed at registration time in place of a Social Security card if one is not available.
Once registration is completed, students who have submitted all required documents and filled out registration packets will have their names placed in a lottery drawing for their zoned school for possible selection. When all slots become full, the remaining students will be placed on a waiting list in the order in which their names were drawn during the lottery process. Parents/guardians will be notified if and when more spaces become available, and pre-k enrollment is determined by school attendance zones.
Registration times will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 24, and 26-28. On Tuesday, Feb. 25 registration will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Applications and other required documents can be downloaded from the Pre-K Department Page on the NCSS website.
