Newton detention deputy fired on allegations of sending images to teen

COVINGTON — A Newton County detention officer has been terminated after he was arrested this week on charges that he sent pornographic images to a 16-year-old female.

Jacob Allen Vanderzwart, 23, of 125 Aspen Forest Drive, was arrested Thursday and charged with electronically furnishing pornography to a minor.

According to Sgt. Cortney Morrison with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, the girl’s parents contacted the Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 23 concerned their daughter had been raped. However, investigators determined that the sexual relationship was consensual.

Investigators conducted a forensic interview of the girl and learned that inappropriate pictures had been sent by and to Vanderzwart, Morrison said.

“Probable cause was obtained and a warrant was issued,” she said.

After his arrest, Vanderzwart, who had worked for the Sheriff’s Office for less than a year, was terminated and is no longer an employee of Newton County, Morrison said.
