Deputy finds drugs when helping motorist with flat tire

CONYERS — Lady luck was not kind to a Covington man who found himself arrested on drug charges after a deputy stopped to help him change a flat tire.

Sometime around 8:45 p.m. Friday, Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Joshua Ricks stopped to help a motorist who was changing a flat tire on Underwood Road.

Ricks said after he turned on the blue lights on his patrol vehicle, he walked up to the driver.

“Standing next to the open driver’s window, I could smell marijuana from the interior of the vehicle and I saw a bag of marijuana in plain view on the driver’s seat,” the deputy stated in the incident report.

Ricks then placed the man, identified as 21-year-old Givenso Charlot of 370 Shiver Blvd. in Covington, under arrest.

The deputy reported that Charlot was asked whether he had any other contraband and he reportedly said he did not.

However, during the search prior to being booked in the jail, a detention deputy found another bag of marijuana in Charlot’s possession.

He was then charged with possession of marijuana less than 1 ounce and crossing the guard line of the jail with drugs.
