“I would like to know why the major author of 2050 Plan, Morton Ewing, has been noticeably absent from of all of the meetings and mostly absent media scrutiny. I will say that Mr. Ewing has put his land in county and state future non-development programs, so he is at least practicing what he preaches. But I would like to understand why he has not been the major face of the 2050 Plan when he in fact was one of the three main authors of the plan.”

——

“So is this a socialist school system where our principal directs us not to discuss the car theft with parents? Who does she think she is and who trusts anyone like that?”

——

“President Obama’s press spokesweasel, Josh Earnest, is already out on paternity leave. He just started that job in June. This tells me two things: first, government jobs and especially ‘paternity leave’ are the biggest ripoffs in the country, and two, Earnest ain’t gonna be able to hack the lies. Two months, and he’s already looking for an excuse to take a few weeks off. I give him a year or less.”

——

“Stolen vehicles on the west side. Life is good in the overlay districts. You’ll laugh (until) you’ll cry. 2050 will push your crime sky high!”

——

“Our leaders are worried with a plan 36 years out called 2050 while crime is so rampant in Newton West, aka DeKalb East, today right now right here in 2014 and they do nothing about it. The school system has never got to 20,000 and we hear this week enrollment in NCSS is down. Get a clue. People are leaving Newton, not coming here. What say you, Chamber?”

——

“GPC your number problem is not economics; it is because white students get treated so that we do not feel welcome at your school. So we leave.”

——

“(There is) a job posting on the Georgia Municipal Association’s website. It is for the chief of police opening for Porterdale. If you are qualified for this position please submit your information. My only concern is the questionable language giving preference to currently unqualified applicants. And lack of qualifications and exceptions for filling this position. ‘Preference will be given to internal Porterdale Police Department candidates.’ Wow! What a joke! Porterdale currently does not have a qualified officer without making a lot of exceptions and accommodations. It’s time for the citizens to rise up. This is unethical and not in this town’s best interest! Wake up town, read the writing on the wall. It’s in black and white.”

——

“2050 Plan screws us on the west side. Makes us pay the wealthy land owners in the east to rape our land again by more development. The 2050 Plan does not care about us in the west and we like to have our own county.”

——

“Why is the Covington News still fighting the Civil War? Enough already!”

——

“Is it true that a career academy administrator was at the BOE the morning after the news broke that Woodard is leaving? In the deputy superintendent’s office? Mrs. Fuhrey, please do not promote any current admins to the CEO job or you will do much harm to NCCA.”

——

“Man, does our city council stink. They vote down cell towers, then revote but approve drive-up liquor. Have they seen the Newton Jail Log? It is full of DUIs and druggies.”

——

“Time for Hunter Hall to move on.”

——

“Is Steve Whatley the BOE appointee to the 2050 citizens panel? Wasn’t he superintendent when the Alcovy building was built, which flies totally in the face of walkable communities? Why would this contradiction be of use on the panel if he is the choice?”

——

“Keith Ellis sounds so disconnected from the BOC members like he has no clue how to do his job. This 2050 mess will leave some folks unelectable.”

——

“Is the high school sports folks going by the Georgia High School Association rules? They have caused my kid to miss out on his tryouts. This is wrong.”

——

“So am I supposed to think it is a coincidence that the headline picture for today’s Citizen is a picture of Jeff Meadors and a student, and then scrolling down, see that the title of his own article this week is something about ‘quality advising’? This seems ridiculous to the point of being funny. The editors should at least try to maintain the pretense of impartiality.”

Editor’s note: Actually, this was a coincidence. We planned to publish a story about Georgia Perimeter enrollment figures on Wednesday, which is the same day that Meadors’ column typically appears. When we sent a staffer out on Tuesday to take a photo at GPC, there wasn’t much going on and that was the photo he got. Funny or not, that’s what happened.

——

“I really doubt the GPC low numbers — at least in our town — have much to do with the economy. Instead retrain your rude and disrespectful 90 percent minority staff that all seem to have a real attitude.”

——

“I agree entirely with the comments in the Rockdale Poll last week concerning the hypocritical ‘Christian’ tour leader who by his admissions demonstrates that he does not understand the teachings of Christ and even attempts to spread his inadequate interpretations of the Bible. I also agree with the comments about the ex-history teacher who is frequently inaccurate in his ramblings, and I am not talking about ancient history either.”

——

“I guess in Newton County we do not have a Republican Party, we have a Rino Party. A bunch of tree-hugging, left-wing Rinos. Never going to vote for them again. District 5 and 1 and the chairman will be Dumbacart in two years. Stop 2050.”

——

“The 2050 Plan will bring us new cities, the city of the Hub, the city of Salem, the city of Oak Hill, the city of Stewart, the city of Dialtown, the city of Fairview, the city of Magnet, the city of Rocky Plains, the city of Starsville, the city of Hayston, the city of Alcovy, the city of Potts Crossroads, and the city of Almon. Thank you Hunter and The Center. You have divided our community. Great job!”

——

“So let me get this right. The entire county has to deal with a 2050 Plan because a school board under Clamp and Whatley built a remote high school near Jasper County? Do not buy it for a minute. This Mount Pleasant Inc. greed lines pockets just like new high schools serve to pay off higher ups for otherwise useless land. It is all rigged. Smart Growth and The Center, find something new to play with.”

——

“I think Hunter Hall has outlived his usefulness.”

——

“Why would Ronnie Johnston vote against cell towers then whine about a lawsuit, which he knew was likely at the time, only to reverse course? This town has gone stupid.”

——

“What is Mount Pleasant Inc.? Who owns it and who benefits if it is not required to remain undeveloped like the other land in District 1 under 2050? Is this linked in any way to The Center where this plan was hatched? If so someone please explain. If linked, is this 2050 only a plot to enrich Mount Pleasant Inc. owners while punishing thousands of residents who own acreage outside of Mount Pleasant Inc.?”

——

“The leadership collaborative and 2050 are so political now I think the school superintendent needs to stop attending the meetings or she will align herself without intention with a partisan stance. This plan has inflamed citizens and eroded trust further than it had already been eroded. Kay Lee can find something else to do surely. Repay the taxpayers for this failed experiment and put it to rest as a novel idea lacking both reality and support and move on to our trashy 278 corridor and get out and pick up trash.. Rid the Chamber of Hall and bring new leadership to the Chamber… We can live more peacefully without this plan. Our majority minority school board is failing our kids in math so the pop ups of private schools are an attraction for newcomers. 2050 has hurt that attraction. If the elected boards keep haggling over 2050 vote them all out in future elections and pray for better. We need to know how much taxpayer money has been taken from the hands of taxpayers on 2050 on meetings and meals and rent to Burge for past annual meetings and on salaries, and we need that back for these greedy boards who keep sucking us dry. Ask anyone in nearby counties; no one wants to move to Newton schools and no one gives two hoots about the Hollywood tours or the Mystic Grill, both fads to eventually pass in the night and shutter like most biz on the Square. Where is leadership in this very backward town whose leaders like Ellis appear weak and willing to sell out his voter base to socialist land plans? He will never get my vote again.”

——

“Put the 2050 Plan in the trash and let us move on to real work. Repeal it and tell the city of Covington to get lost; if any entity should add seven members, it should be seven taxpaying landowners from District 1. Get your hands off our property rights and go play ‘build my utopia’ on your own dime in a nontaxpayer-supported center called your back porch! Developers are laughing at Newton County seeking them out while playing Big Brother. We voted out this way to keep Baxter in ZIP code 30025. Do not underestimate the power of the people. The mayor from Alpharetta ain’t gettin’ no negotiations on this.”

——

“No one affiliated with Smart Growth should be on any 2050 citizens panel. They are behind this crap.”
