Old Oxford Road bridge closed for repairs

COVINGTON — The Old Oxford Road bridge that spans Interstate 20 in Newton County has been closed in both directions until further notice due to damage to the bridge.

According to the state Department of Transportation, the bridge was damaged when a truck hit the bridge beams on the eastbound side of I-20 over the weekend. The bridge is located just east of the Almon Road interchange. There is no interstate access from Old Oxford Road.

DOT bridge engineers are working with Newton County officials to assess the damage and determine what repairs are needed, as well as when the bridge can re-open. Detour routes have been posted by Newton County.
