“Some predictable right-winger gave the following misquote attributed to President Obama in the poll of July 27: ‘Ordinary men and women are too small-minded to govern their own affairs, that order and progress can only come when individuals surrender their rights to an all-powerful sovereign.’ This lie was rated ‘pants on fire’ by all fact check sources years ago! Some right-winger created a video and slyly spliced together two separate passages of Obama’s speech in a way that totally changed the meaning. Obama wasn’t saying that ‘ordinary men and women are too small-minded to govern their own affairs’ or that individuals should ‘surrender their rights to an all-powerful sovereign.’ Rather, he was saying that those two sentiments run counter to the ideals of free will and democracy. Two separate thoughts from an actual speech, spliced together through video editing in a way that twists Obama’s argument beyond recognition! What a shame that racist right-wingers will believe anything negative they hear about President Obama and pass it on for the informed to jeer and the Limbaugh/Beck type followers to believe.”

“The developers have organized to kill the 2050 Plan and move forward with their efforts to build out east Newton like they did west Newton and then take the money and run. They keep saying, ‘let us vote on the plan.’ Well, they forget that the developers and old-time land owners in east Newton are now greatly outnumbered by the residents who have arrived in the last 20 years and love the open spaces, greenery and high quality of life. If they want a vote, bring it on. But here is a bit of a warning for them: you better be careful what you ask for, you might get it and not be so happy later. Many of us don’t care what you call the plan as long as it keeps big growth out and quality of life in.”

“Thank God for Obamacare. Before the Affordable Care Act, a.k.a. Obamacare, the U.S. ranked worst among 11 wealthy nations in terms of ‘efficiency, equity and outcomes’ despite having the world’s most expensive health care system. Know where the USA ranked worldwide – 38th. Most profitable is the Republican idea of best — people are not that important to the Teapublicans. As Romney said, ‘Corporations are people, my friend.’ Don’t believe what Corporate America pays billions to misinform you. Know where the huge profits are going — into CEOs’ pockets and offshore corporate tax shelters while we subsidize big business.”

“Two weeks ago there were three entries here critical of Georgia Perimeter College, Newton Campus. Those concerns were seen and have been forwarded to the proper college officials for review and possible action. Speaking up does get results. Thank you for the comments.”

“Its time for the 2050 folks to go. Bring in the grown ups.”

“A couple of comments. The first, pedestrians crossing the streets around the Square and not using the crosswalks. I have been avoiding the Square for some time because of it and the fact that I never know when I may be delayed due to filming. I have seen people just walk into the roadway to get from point A to point B as if daring drivers to hit them. My other comment has to do with the telephone tower to be erected on Monticello Street. The mayor reportedly said that there was a 99 percent chance that the city would lose if a lawsuit was filed, which leads to three followup questions 1) why did he vote against it in the first place, the threat was already known of a potential lawsuit; 2) What are the other three councilmen thinking about, especially if the odds are anywhere as great as the mayor seems to think; and 3) why are they, the three voting against, grand-standing?”

“This is just my opinion, but to the person who felt that Sonya Hunte should have campaigned harder to defeat the incumbent, I don’t think it would have helped. The last time he had opposition I was sure that because of his ineffectiveness coupled with his public family problems that the voters would boot him from office — wrong. It says a lot about Newton voters just as it did about voters in Clayton County who elected a sheriff with over 35 pending indictments against him. As for those threats toward elected officials that if they don’t do their jobs they won’t be re-elected, not in Newton County. I’ll believe it when I see it.”

“I have seen references toward both the sheriff as well as the Covington police chief that because crime is high that neither of these individuals are doing a good job. I don’t agree, and I for one am thankful that we don’t have men and women in uniforms in our area that do not exercise restraint when dealing with the public. The PoPo, as they are referred to, cannot be everywhere or do a good job in a society where people don’t want to get involved. The young people are quick to say that they don’t ‘snitch’ on those who are involved in criminal activity. Much of the problem starts in the homes. Such complaints about those in charge sound as if someone is gearing up for an election run or seeking an appointment.”

——

“I am so sick of the 2050 Plan and appalled that hundreds of thousands of dollars of taxpayer money has been spent on this. Shut that silly Center down and make those workers get a real job. This has divided our people and our county due to the secretive bad behavior of about 25 people with nothing more to do than play with maps and crayons all day.”

——

“Covington demands seven 2050 members. Fat chance. Losers!”

——

“Vote Keith Ellis out if he keeps Hunter Hall at the Chamber. I plan to vote for anyone in 2016 just not Ellis if he and the BOC keep Hall and if they support 2050.”

——

“Kill 2050 now. Just kill it!”

——

“Covington City Council sounds like a trip to crazy town. Let’s approve drive-through booze in a town where the weekly jail log is full of DUIs and meth. Good job, council, but guess you fret over cell towers. Leadership in Covington is horrible.”

——

“Dang, can you get more stupid? Now elected bodies moan over how many reps on the money-sucking 2050 socialist citizens panel. Is this like the death panel? 2050 is a disaster.”

——

“If the city wants more people on the 2050 board, then I will not compromise. I will start to repeal the whole thing. Just need 6,000 voters. Easy. NO TDRs. No 2050 plan. No compromises with the city of Covington.”

——

“The city of Covington has 10 percent of the population of Newton County and now they want 35 percent of the seats on the 2050 committee. I’m sorry, but you chose to put your money behind a left-wing plan that your employee wanted for the whole county and now it is going over like a turd in the punch bowl, and you want 35 percent say for 90 percent of us. The city is the problem. No 2050.”
