Car show to benefit firefighter's son

COVINGTON — Classic cars are coming to Covington as Commissioner Lanier Sims hosts the annual May car show for charity on the Square.

The 2014 Coming Together Newton County Festival will benefit a scholarship fund for 12-year-old Brayden Eavenson, whose father served as a firefighter for the Newton County Fire Service. Brad lost his life in a single-vehicle car wreck in February.

The festival will showcase cars, music and the history of Newton from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 18.

Sims said businesses are still needed to sponsor the show, which means donating giveaways, gift certificates or even attending the show as a vendor.

“We anticipate a great day with plenty of cars and people,” Sims said. “This scholarship fund for Brayden comes close to my heart and that’s the reason I stepped up to the plate. I’m a new father of my first son, and I hate to think what if anything ever happened to me. So this was a must for me and hopefully a chance to raise some money in order to grow the scholarship fund.”

This isn’t Sims’ first time hosting a car show for a good cause. Every August, a car show collects proceeds for the Miracle League and a show in October benefits the Rotary Club of Covington. Sims decides the nonprofit the May car show will benefit and in previous years he’s donated to the Arts Association in Newton County, Washington Street Community Center, the homeless shelter and others.

The Coming Together Newton County event gives an opportunity for everyone to see what each person in the community can offer to the county as a whole. The Newton County Fire Department and Sims teamed up to create a day that has become a tradition in Newton. Their vision is to highlight the local businesses, organizations, resources and history in Newton County for a day while supporting the organizations that give back to the community.

Businesses or individuals interested in becoming a sponsor can contact Sims at 404-585-1922 or lanier@thechbgroup.com. Sponsorships range in price from $500 to $50.
