Eastside, Rockdale well represented at state meet

The Rockdale and Eastside track teams made a statement as they are each participating in 13 events in the Georgia High School Association Track and Field Championships.

In the Class AAAAAA B-Sectional at Tift County High School, the Rockdale girls were able to advance to five events with the boys advancing to eight events in the state meet. Newton is going to send 10 teams to the state meet, two girls and eight boys, with Alcovy sending two girls.

Rockdale’s Candace Hill won two of her events in the sectional coming first in the 100-meter dash and the 200. Also advancing for the Rockdale girls are Antwonetee Thomas who will participate in the 800. The Rockdale girls will also participate in the 4x100 and 4x400 relay race.

Participating for the Rockdale boys are Lawrence Crawford (100 and 200), Jhibri Greer (110-hurdles and 300-hurdles), Keijne Thomas (discus and shot put) and Robert McCray (shot put) as well as the 4x400 team.

Newton’s Brianna Hayden will participate in both events for the girls at sate having finished in the top-eight at sectional in the 200 and 400.

Representing the Newton boys at the state will be Aziriah Foster (300-hurdles), Jeremiah Holloman (high jump and triple jump), Mushadi Ibere (high jump) and Malik Frankllin (long jump and triple jump).

Newton will also compete in the boys 4x100 and 4x400.

Out of the eight events with an Alcovy athlete, the only Brianna Archer was able to advance representing the Tigers track team in the 400 and 800.

In the Class AAAA A-Sectional in Carrollton, Eastside had 19 teams trying to make it to state with 13 finding success as six girls and seven boys events advancing.

Making it for the girls were Corin Stokes (100), Zaria Barton (100), Breanna Thornton (400 and triple jump), Nylah Chavis (high jump) and the 4x100 relay team.

The 4x100 and 4x400 teams will be running for the Eastside boys while Eric Stokes (100), Daniel Oduah (400), Landon Moore (800) and Michael Griffen (discus) going for individual events.

The girls meet will be at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany with the three-day meet starting on Thursday, May 1. The boys will hold their meet at Memorial Stadium in Jefferson starting on Thursday, May 8.
