CONYERS — Travelers along Interstate 20 through Rockdale and Newton counties should be prepared for day-time lane closures due to the Georgia Department of Transportation’s resurfacing project.
The lane closures began Friday at 9 p.m. from Ga. Highway 138 in Rockdale to Alcovy Road in Newton and will continue until 5 a.m. Monday.
“This section of roadway was last paved in 1988 and is definitely in need of resurfacing,” said District Construction Engineer Shun Pringle. “Call 511 and plan your alternate route ahead of time if you want to miss the delays.”
Two left lanes will be closed on I-20 westbound from Almon Road to Ga. Highway 138 as crews will be removing the old asphalt and replacing it with new.
Most of the work on the $11.5 million project being contracted by Pittman Construction Company will be done at night and on weekends and the project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The Newton County bridge repair project will continue and affect traffic. From noon Sunday to Thursday, May 1, one I-20 westbound lane will be closed. The project is set to finish June 30.
