PORTERDALE — In an effort to improve the Porterdale Volunteer Fire Department’s station, firefighters will be hosting a fun family day on May 3.
Porterdale Spring Fling event organizer Katie Savage said there will be crafts, food vendors, raffles, live music, games and more for the community.
“It’s important for the community to be informed and involved with the Fire Department to raise awareness of our commitment to our community,” Savage said. “It is a reminder that we are there and are actively participating in the protection of our city.”
Savage said the event allows firefighters to get involved in a positive and entertaining way and be able to improve the department’s relationship with the community.
While the event is free and open to Newton County as a whole, the Fire Department will raise money by selling hamburgers and hotdogs and donated baked goods as well as offering a dunk booth and other games for the children. All the money raised goes to maintenance and renovations for the fire station.
“There is a lot of work needed to be done to our department. We currently need to paint inside and out. We are in need of carpet for our meeting room and offices and flooring for our restroom and kitchen,” Savage said. “Our kitchen has some very outdated appliances but are not completely necessary for everyday use. Any appliance is greatly appreciated and would be a bonus if we could upgrade.”
Savage said the department wants to complete the repairs in order to be able to use the fire station to host private events like birthday parties or meetings for a small donation to help with the upkeep. The goal is to raise about $2,000 for the improvements.
“We are just looking for the funds to buy the materials because we are going to do the work ourselves, as well as third parties who are wanting to contribute by means of labor,” Savage said.
With more than 30 vendors signed up to attend the event, there’s sure to be fun for any age. Live music from three different bands — The Ty Chelsey Band, The Robby Parker Band and Loving Annie — will provide entertainment for the adults. A wristband will be available for children to participate in the games and jump castles all day.
The Spring Fling will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the Porterdale ball field.
