The season came to an end for the Heritage boys tennis team Wednesday.
Region 6-AAAAA runner-up North Atlanta won 4-1 in the first round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs. Heritage, which got its victory from No. 2 singles player TJ Wilson, went 11-6 with a third-place finish in Region 8.
“We had a really good group this year, those guys worked extremely hard,” said Patriots coach Chuck Landy, whose team went to the state playoffs for the seventh time in 10 years. “They had fun playing tennis, they are really good guys to be around. We were proud of those guys, we had a good, competitive team.”
Wilson won 6-1, 6-4 over Donovan Davis, but Jay Vinson lost at No. 1 singles to Chris Tyler and North Atlanta’s strong doubles teams picked up victories with John Lieng and Hayes Musser defeating Ronnie Flow and Kevin Blum at No. 1 doubles and Jackson Couch and Neil Jackson knocking off Darius Lewis and Levi Lund at No. 2 doubles.
“Our one and two doubles teams all year long gave us a chance (to win). We were really hoping we could get through and get this one today,” said Landy. “(North Atlanta was) strong, they had a solid team. We were pretty solid from top to bottom, had a very solid year and beat some good teams along the way.”
The No. 3 seed Heritage girls will open the state playoffs Thursday against Region 6 runner-up Lakeside-DeKalb at the DeKalb Tennis Center at 4 p.m.
