NCFS responds to three fires

COVINGTON — Newton County Fire Service experienced a busy weekend as firefighters worked two house fires on Sunday and one structure fire early Monday morning.

Fire Chief Kevin O’Brien said a blaze at a home at 11489 Ga. Highway 36 started in the garage while the family was gone around 8:10 p.m. Sunday.

“We’re still trying to figure out the cause but the garage is a complete loss while the home received significant water and smoke damage,” O’Brien said. “No one was home during the time of the fire.”

NCFS responded to a second fire around 8:50 p.m. Sunday at 575 Covered Bridge Road. O’Brien said an outbuilding on the property was a complete loss.

Deputy Chief Brad Stapp said the cause is still unknown but it appears the fire may have been started by an electrical problem.

NCFS is investigating a fire that engulfed an abandoned house on Christian Circle around 1:53 a.m. Monday.

No one was in the house and no utilities were in use, O’Brien said. Stapp said the fire appeared to be accidental, but it is still being investigated.
