Morgan Co. deputy charged with child molestation

NCSO: Incidents reportedly occurred in Newton Co.

COVINGTON — A Morgan County Sheriff’s Office deputy was arrested by the Newton County Sheriff’s Office Monday on allegations that he inappropriately touched a young girl several years ago.

According to a press release from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Daniel McGinnis has been arrested and charged with aggravated child molestation.

McGinnis, who was 21 at the time of the alleged incident, resides at 497 Ga. Highway 212 in Covington, the NCSO incident report states.

McGinnis is a former NCSO deputy as well, according to authorities.

NCSO Sgt. Cortney Morrison said the victim recently made an outcry to a school guidance counselor, which prompted authorities to become involved.

“Authorities conducted a forensic interview during which a disclosure was made that the suspect touched her inappropriately during the period of 2006 to 2011,” Morrison said.

The victim, who was 6 years of age in 2006, and McGinnis apparently knew each other. The alleged molestation occurred in Newton County, she said.

“Deputy McGinnis is currently suspended without pay pending an internal investigation. He is being held in the Newton County Adult Detention Center pending a bond hearing on Wednesday,” said Capt. Christopher Bish with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.
