For the second consecutive season there was little doubt who was Region 2-AAAAAA’s top tennis program.
The girls and boys teams from Rockdale didn’t lose a set in four matches, winning the league crown for the second straight season. As a top seed, Rockdale will host the No. 4 seeds from Region 4-AAAAAA in next week’s Class AAAAAA State Tournament.
The boys defeated Druid Hills 4-0 in the region final as Logan Hull won at No. 2 singles, Trey Hull was victorious as No. 3 singles and the doubles teams of Abenet Addisu and Bruce Mitchell won at No. 1 and Cameron Debro and Tyyon Anthony picked up a victory at No. 2.
In the girls final, Rockdale was dominant, not losing a game in knocking off Newton 3-0. The Bulldogs got victories from No. 1 singles player Summer Walker, No. 2 Destiny Commodore and the No. 1 doubles team of Abby Bradford and Tiara Anthony. The Rams will be the No. 2 seed and host a state playoff match this week.
“I’m really proud of all the kids, this was one of our goals to win the region so we could have the number one seed in the state playoffs,” said Rockdale coach Stephen Sansing.
Rockdale defeated Newton 3-0 in the boys semifinals as No. 1 singles player Patrick Sanders, No. 1 doubles Addisu and Mitchell and No. 2 doubles Anthony and Aaron Barron all picked up wins.
In the girls semifinals, Rockdale took care of Luella 3-0 as Walker, Commodore and Bradford and Anthony took care of business with relative ease.
“Our team was a lot deeper and stronger than last year, and it showed this week,” Sansing said after the region season concluded. “Whoever we match up with for the first round of state will be tough, however, we feel like this year we are more prepared for a top team that we will see in the first round.”
The Heritage teams followed an identical path to third-place finishes at the Region 8-AAAAA Tournament.
In the third-place match, the Heritage boys got 6-0, 6-1 victories from Jay Vinson at No. 1 singles and TJ Wilson at No. 2, along with a 6-4, 6-4 win out of the No. 1 doubles team (Kevin Blum and Ronnie Flow) to defeat Clarke Central 3-2. Heritage had dropped a 3-1 match to Gainesville in the semifinals, which followed a 3-2 victory over Winder-Barrow-Wilson won 6-3, 6-1 and the doubles teams of Blum and Flow and No. 2 Levi Lund and Darius Lewis won 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1, respectively-in the quarterfinals. The boys will travel to Region 6-AAAAA runner-up North Atlanta in a first-round match Wednesday.
The Heritage girls also defeated Winder in the quarterfinals, lost to eventual league champion Gainesville in the semifinals and clipped Clarke Central in the consolation match. The Patriots will head to Region 6-AAAAA runner-up Lakeside-DeKalb for the opening round.
