Allen picks up big dual win

The magical year on the wrestling mats for Alonzo Allen continued Sunday.

Allen, a senior at Rockdale, defeated nationally-ranked Brian Rossi of Illinois 9-4 at the Cliff Keen Dream Team Classic at Lassiter High School. The classic pitted an all-star team of Georgia wrestlers against a United States all-star team (the USA team won 37-15).

Rossi, a native of Lockport, Illinois, was ranked No. 7 at 113 pounds by intermatwrestle.com coming into the match, which Allen won with four takedowns and an escape.

“Alonzo had an outstanding performance at the Dream Team Classic,” said Rockdale coach Craig Hargrove, who attended the match.

Allen had already been having a phenomenal year before Sunday’s big victory.

In February he won his second Georgia state wrestling championship, then in March became an All-American by finishing third at the NHSCA Senior Nationals in Virginia Bech, Virginia.

“Over the past few weeks he’s proved he can wrestle at the highest level,” said Hargrove, who also coached Allen to a state title in 2013 and a pair of runner-up finishes in 2011 and 2012. “He controlled the match (against Rossi) from all positions.”

Although Allen hasn’t yet chosen a college to continue his wrestling career, Hargrove is confident the Conyers native will shine wherever he ends up.

“Alonzo has the potential of becoming an excellent collegiate wrestler,” Hargrove said. “The sky’s the limit with him.”
