Heritage grad helps GSU softball sweep Texas State

Heritage graduate Callie Alford helped Georgia State’s softball team sweep a pair of conference games Saturday. Alford got the Panthers started with a two-run single off Texas State starter Ashley Wright in the bottom of the first, and home runs by Kensey Caldwell, Mandy Blackwell and Ashley Christy (her second hit of the inning) capped a nine-run inning as the Panthers cruised to a 10-2 win in game two at Bob Heck Field.

Eron Milton was the beneficiary of the early run support, pitching four innings of two-run ball to pick up the victory despite walking five and hitting a batter.

Kaitlyn Medlam was dominant in the opener, firing a complete game, four-hitter in an 8-1 victory. Medlam struck out seven and was aided by an offense that snapped a 1-1 tie with three runs in the third on Christy’s first three-run home run of the day, then tacked on runs in each of the final three innings, including going up 6-1 on Mandy Blackwell’s two-run single in the fourth.

For Georgia State (22-21, 6-5 Sun Belt Conference), which has won five of six games, Rockdale graduate MeQuilla Franklin reached base twice in game one, singling and being hit by a pitch.

Texas State fell to 21-23 overall and 4-7 in league play. The St. Marcos, Texas school still hasn’t picked up a victory in 11 road games.

The teams will conclude the three-game series Sunday with a scheduled noon first pitch.
