“When you read headline after headline about the Newton County Board of Commissioners paying County Attorney Tommy Craig $700,000 a year, or spending tens of thousands on Internet website make-overs, or ‘pork barrel’ projects like community center after school computer centers, remember this spending is being funded on the backs of the county employees. For going on six years now county employees have been forced to take pay cuts and benefit cuts, they have had their paid holidays taken away, and they are paid tens of thousands less than city of Covington employees. The working class employees just keep getting kicked down.”

“When are the CCRPI scores coming out for Newton schools?”

——

“Can this paper do a report on crime numbers by type of crime in Newton and explain the confusion our BOC has on legal uses for SPLOST and the lack of knowledge our Tweeting school board has on open meetings? I want to move to Morgan County and need to know how hard it will be to sell my Newton house.”

——

“To the school board, we are trying to get out of the Career Academy like crazy. No leadership.”

“I was driving down the street the other day and saw people distributing campaign flyers. Later, I saw my local mail carrier when he delivered my mail and asked him about flyers or other items on mailboxes, these flyers and things fall off most times and then help clog the storm drains. The letter carrier advised me that all parts of a mailbox are the domain of the U.S. Postal Service. I was surprised since so many items end up tucked or taped to mailboxes, so I looked up the law. Mailboxes are for postage-paid mail only and no part of a mailbox can be used to deliver any material not having postage. Oh, and tucking something between the flag and the mailbox is not OK. So all you politicians, campaign workers, home improvement contractors, landscapers, churches, fundraisers and anyone else that does this: anything you put on a mailbox, you are breaking the law! So knock it off.”

“To the individual who had this to say in last week’s Poll, ‘Thank God for the Mystic Grill and boo to the couple of naysayers who complained about their health score.’ I was not of the so-called naysayers, but I do not eat at restaurants that have failing health scores either. … I do not own or have any interest in any restaurants personally, but I do search out the health score posted in the establishment before ordering wherever I dine out. If one is not posted I leave. I have never met Mayor Johnston or his business partner, Ms. Bezsborn, and have no secret agenda to see them fail, but rest assured their business health score will have to be no less than a ‘B’ or better on a consistent basis before I would even consider entering their establishment. As for the statement, ‘The Grill is the best thing that has happened to our community ’ is subjective and that remains to be seen. This business, as are a couple more around the Square, seems to be capitalizing off the TV series more than anything else … ”

Editor’s note: The most recent health score at Mystic Grill was 85, based on a March 26 inspection.

“The Newton School System has horrible central office communication with schools; our principal agrees with us. What are they out to hide from us if your teachers and principals are out of the loop? How do you increase achievement?”

——

“So the wife has spring break this week, so we decided to check out the BOE meetings the stupid central office blasts multiple times each meeting begging people to watch videos of. They don’t pay her enough to go to the beach yet everyone in the central office with few exceptions makes six figures. Funniest sh$%^ I have seen in years. These folks are pompous and in love with their own lips moving. It is no wonder NCSS scores suck. Watch these board meeting videos to see that, yes, the Citizen Poll has been correct all along. We are moving to Morgan County.”

——

“I still say the public deserves answers as to the grand jury presentment regarding workman liens on NSP homes and the use of federal funds and the minority contractor that allegedly walked out. Do BOC members and the past chair want to explain the town talk on all of this? Tommy Craig — what does he know?”

——

“A piece is out today on school system grades and Newton once again was below the state last year. Why is the system never held accountable for embarrassing us and hurting our property values? Can we get a politician to do away with school taxes when districts stay below state average so we can use that money to send them to private school?”

——

“The old man wants a few things this week. Bring back the school crime reports and go to the Newton education summit, paper people, and ask the superintendent why Newton stays below the state on the score that is new. Report back to us please.”

——

“I think the Chimney Park peeps live like fairies and got their panties in a wad.”

——

“What do Fairview Elementary and a gun and … teacher and drugs have in common? They are part of a school system that has bad leadership.”

——

“So the NCSS invites us to get involved? OK. Can we start by getting the central office shut down for putting worthless garbage on our backs?”
