“I hope Samantha Fuhrey does not give in to the crowd who pushes to hire based on skin color when naming a permanent principal at Newton High. I think we have plenty of evidence that this goes badly and I can name four examples all who resigned mid-year never to be heard from and no explanation to taxpayers in full. Probably money issues, based on what we hear. Stop hiring like this. It hurts schools and students. You’d be surprised to know who is trying to leave NCSS this year due to bad hires forced into their buildings and don’t pass the trash. If employees do not perform well, don’t dump them at the Career Academy.”

“Best lunch in town. Today, Thursday March 27, I had lunch with a friend at Thomas’s Country Buffet on Emory Street and it was great! I have been in the Conyers/Covington area for 30-plus years and their lunch is the best around. The true country-style cooking puts all the ‘big chain’ restaurants around to shame. They have fried chicken like Momma used to make it. Think I will take her there next week to let her try it. Looking forward to my next visit.”

“Does Tommy Craig still have tax liens the Citizen reported on publicly two or three years back?”

——

“I do not buy all the hype these politicians espouse on Newton Career Academy. The tech college classes my child took we just found out do not transfer.”

——

“Taxpayers are the Newton BOC’s cash cow. $700K to Tommy Craig. $8K to keep propping up Washington Street and a worthless Chamber who showers us in dollar stores and title loan shops and tattoos. I would not move here either. Keith Ellis’ comment to make Newton the top county for growth has us all laughing in our dollar stores. We do not intend to keep him in office long enough for him to do much of anything.”

——

“Well, well, imagine my surprise when I saw on the front page of the local paper, ‘School system recommended for reaccreditation.’ All that’s left to say is congratulations NCSS and the school board, someone must be doing something right.”

——

“The former NCSO deputy just sentenced to five years in prison should have his picture in the paper just like any other criminal. We are looking forward to the day when my family and I can say goodbye to Hollywood of the South. I wouldn’t mind if all city/county residents could enjoy the fruits of being inconvenienced on a regular basis by having our utilities or taxes lowered. I only go through the Square if it’s absolutely necessary, and it isn’t for me, but I do not care for having to take the long way to where I may have to go, the hospital and post office readily come to mind. Only a few are making any money besides the police and a few business owners.”

“The Old Man would like to talk about the police and fire department today because I sometimes think they get a bad rap. They work really at the discretion of the commission, the politicians usually use them for political purposes and then the public yells at them because they aren’t doing their job. I know about this because I was in charge of the safety committee and spent a lot of time with the police and firefighters. I have heard people say that all those firemen do is sit around at the firehouse and tell jokes and eat. When I was 12, I sat with my uncles who spent a lot of time at the firehouse. It was the Great Depression and most of these men were out of work and volunteers. Yes they sat around, talked, maintained the equipment, maintained the firehouse, set up games for the kids in the summer, and when there was a fire they put their life on the line. They put on their heavy jacket and helmet and that pretty much was their equipment. Today they have many pounds of equipment they have to wear whether it is 10 below or 120 above. When they return after maybe a day of fighting the fire they now must take care of the equipment. Sure, you will always find a bad apple in the bunch and that is what the media dwells on, but remember, they are out there putting their life on the line for you. The police are a different story. How many times have you been speeding along at the posted speed and some nut driving 90 mph passes you on a double yellow line. Your first question is where is a cop when you need one. If you read the police reports you will see they are trying to take care of a domestic dispute, stop a car thief and who knows which one will pull out a gun. Of course if a cop pulls out his gun and shoots then the public asks why. But today it seems like the way people solve their problems is with a gun, and if a cop stands in the way … Just remember, the police and the firemen are here to protect you, but they can’t be every place at once. Take the time to say thanks.”

“Thank God for the Mystic Grill and boo to the couple of naysayers who complained about their health score. The Grill is the best thing that has happened to our community in the six years we have lived in our wonderful town. They are creating jobs, increasing our tax base and restoring our central city area to a place people want to visit and live. Every time we go to the Grill we meet people from all over the country (and the world) who are so impressed with the quality of food and service provided by the staff of the restaurant. I suspect the few people who are gloating over the score have not even dined at the Mystic Grill. Do yourself a favor and visit soon.”

“So, someone thought sending the papers in the mail would ensure delivery. They were wrong. Sometimes I might get the paper and other times not. There have been four or five times that I got the paper two or three days late and there have been about half a dozen times I have not got my paper at all. I don’t know if the problem is with the paper or the postal service, but I am still just as discouraged with the mail delivery of the paper as I was before the change because either way I am not getting my paper regularly, and I among a lot of other subscribers I have talked to will not be renewing subscriptions when due. I said before this is bad business practice and I still say it is because customer satisfaction is not coming first. It is Monday evening at 8:00 and I still have not received the weekend edition of the Citizen. Someone at the Citizen needs to follow up with their subscribers and see how the mail delivery is working for them, just saying.”

Editor’s note: Please call subscriber services at 770-860-0270 so we can look into your delivery problems.

“GPC has the rudest people working in financial aid and student accounts.”

——

“Crime is out of control in Newton County. No wonder Baxter employees aren’t moving here.”

——

“Ronnie Johnston, methinks thou dost protest too much. Your bad health score and alleged credit card issues at almighty Mystic Grill pale in comparison to your awful PR coach. Be quiet and stop spreading your dirty laundry yourself.”

——

“I hope Keith Ellis enjoys his last two years in office.”

——

“Why did John Douglas announce he was running and then announce withdrawal within 30 days last year for the U.S. race?”

——

“I like tattoos and dumped garbage and pawn and title loan shops nearby. Oh, and I like high crime and thuggery. That’s why I choose Newton. Choose Newton: Working to p… off quality residents on a daily basis.”

——

“The race to replace Doug Holt has turned nasty and mean. Proud of ya, Newton. Just what we expected and exactly why we voted to keep our Social Circle ZIP code. I bet Baxter is secretly happy too to have a Social Circle address.”

——

“I hope Durden succeeds in the lawsuit against Keith Ellis and John Middleton and the corrupt county. Dig into the NSP liens while you are at it and the minority contractor hired by Morgan and Schulz a few years back. Put it to a jury and get Durden fair treatment.”

——

“For Keith Ellis, beating Kathy Morgan was a cinch but the race with the Dem was tight. A strong Democrat or average Republican will beat Ellis in 2016.”

——

“So Keith Ellis is going to make Newton the No. 1 place to do business in Georgia? Just what have you done, Mr. Ellis, to make that happen? We are constantly overlooked by newcomers in favor of Morgan and Oconee, and who can blame newcomers for that? Our Chamber is weak and our elected bodies cannot even comply with Open Meetings laws.”

——

“Looks like the NCSO and CPD are unable to handle the new violence in Newton County. Has west Newton County gone totally to hell? What plan is in place to deal with crime? It is costing us big time. Please return our property tax dollars if this is the best public safety you can provide.”

——

“After reading the article on J.C. Henderson and his SPLOST wish list it makes it scary to see what we have governing Newton County and who has access to tax dollars. All SPLOSTs in Newton should be voted down going forward. Wasteful government.”
