45-year-old Newton Co. woman shot, killed by partner

Victim’s 12-year-old daughter also wounded

COVINGTON — A 45-year-old Covington woman was shot and killed Tuesday and her 12-year-old daughter wounded during an apparent domestic altercation in western Newton County.

According to a press release from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 8:15 p.m. to 55 Cinnamon Fern Circle off Brown Bridge Road Tuesday in reference to a person shot. When deputies arrived, they found the woman had sustained fatal gunshot wounds and her 12-year-old daughter had also sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her hand. The 3-year-old grandson of the suspect, later identified as Aaron Garsua McClain, was also at the scene, but was not harmed, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

Investigators with the Criminal Investigation Division and the Crime Scene Unit who arrived on the scene learned that McClain was the domestic partner of the victim and had fled the scene.

A lookout was issued and McClain was found in a vehicle at a hotel in South Carolina sometime later by a South Carolina Trooper, according to the NCSO. McClain, 45, was arrested and has been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felon, cruelty to children in the first degree and murder.

Deputy Felicia Jefferson said investigators are continuing to investigate the case. The Newton County coroner is working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to determine the cause and manner of death. She said the identity of the victim will be released pending further investigation.
