COVINGTON — Both Eastside golf teams find themselves in the lead after the first round of the Newton Cup having played nine holes at Ashton Hills Golf Club on Monday.
The Eastside boys, led by Quin Murphy with a 36, shot a 165 and have a 14 point lead over Alcovy (179) with Newton trailing with a score of 243.
“I am very proud of the guys coming out and shooting our best nine-hole score of the year,” Eastside head coach Jay Cawthon said. “I hope we can build on this for the next round of the Newton Cup as well as for the region tournament in a couple of weeks.”
Scoring for the Eagles were Jack Mitchell and Tyler Dysart, who had a 42, and Matt Mitchell with a 45. Also having all their scoring players in the 40’s were Alcovy with Andrew Cochran setting the pace with a 41 followed by Matt Lovell (43), Zach Floyd (46) and Hunter Clark (49). Scoring for Newton were Myles Shivers (59), Riley Dameron (60), Blake Brinkley (61) and Brendan Brown (63).
The Eastside girls have a 10-stroke lead over second place Alcovy having shot a 159 to Alcovy’s 169 while the Newton girls are at 192.
The Eastside girls were led by Autumn Whiten with a 48 followed by Sidney Roule with a 54 and Alexis Allen with a 57.
“Autumn has played well for us all year and (Monday) she shot her season best,” Eastside girls coach Judy Smith said. “This is a very hard-working team and I was glad to see their efforts pay off for them.”
Whiten had the low round for all the girls with Alcovy’s Kelsey Knight a few strokes behind with a 53. Joining Knight in scoring for Alcovy were Kaitlyn Doering (57) and Emily Moore (59). Scroing for Newton were Paris Little with a 60 with Ashton McKinnon and Ashley Weesner both shooting a 66.
The final round of the Newton Cup will be an 18-hole match play at the Oaks Course on Tuesday, April 15.
