74-year-old woman ID'd as victim in fatal standoff with deputies

COVINGTON — The Newton County Sheriff’s Office has released the identity of the woman shot and killed Monday in a standoff with deputies.

Deputies responded to the home of Shirley Joyce Brown, 74, at 195 Russell Braden Road, where she was reportedly threatening suicide.

Sometime around 3:30 p.m. Monday, Brown came out of the house armed with a rifle. When deputies ordered her several times to put down the weapon, she reportedly refused and pointed the gun at them, said NCSO Deputy Felicia Jefferson.

It was not clear if more than one deputy fired at the woman. She was taken to an area hospital for treatment where she died.

The Newton County Coroner’s Office is working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, who is handling the investigation into the shooting. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed at GBI headquarters.
