The Stone Mountain Baptist Association of Churches will celebrate their 175th Anniversary on Thursday, Oct. 3 beginning at 4 p.m. at the Emmanuel Community Church, 1400 Highway 212 in Conyers.
This Association of Churches is the fourth largest Southern Baptist Association in the state of Georgia. It’s original name was the Rock Mountain Baptist Association, named after historic Stone Mountain in Dekalb County.
The Stone Mountain Baptist Association consist of 96 churches whose members speak 23 languages including French Creole, Haitian, English, Spanish, Hmong, Korean, Romanian, French African, Amerck, Nepali, Somali, Swahili, Tagrinia (Eritrea), Urdu (Pakistan), Farsi (Iran, Afghanistan), Sudanese, Tamil (Indian), Kunama (Ethiopia), Arabic, Kirundi, Kurdish, Burmese, and Russian.
Keynote speakers for the 7 p.m. session include J. Robert White, executive director of the Georgia Baptist Convention, a fellowship of 3,600 churches statewide and Kevin Ezell, president of the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, a fellowship of 46,000 churches across the U.S. and Canada.
Music will be presented by the Jubal Tones, an acapella group of ministers of music from across Georgia Baptist churches and the Emmanuel Community Church Choir.
The Association is home to Georgia Disaster Relief Feeding Unit 11F, the first responder unit for Georgia with 630 volunteers. The most recent deployment was last year during Hurricane Sandy where the Association served over 100,000 meals to hurricane victims. During Hurricane Katrina, the unit served 800,000 of the 1 million meals served by Georgia Baptist. The Association is also home to Bold Mission Builders, the largest builders group in the state with over 400 volunteers.
