Early voting begins Oct. 14

CONYERS — If you want to vote in the Nov. 5 Municipal Election and the Rockdale County E-SPLOST referendum, you must register by 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7.

Voters can register at any library, Department of Driver Services or Board of Elections Office.

To confirm whether you are a registered voter, call the Rockdale County Board of Elections at 770-278-7333, call the Voter Registration Hotline at 1-888-265-1115 or visit the Secretary of State’s website at http://mvp.sos.state.ga.us.

Advance voting is also just around the corner, beginning Monday, Oct. 14 and running through Friday, Nov. 1.

For the city of Conyers and Rockdale County, early voting in the Municipal Election and the Board of Education Special Election takes place from 8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Rockdale County Board of Elections and Registration at 400 Parker Road, Lobby C.

Mayor Randy Mills is facing Kathy L. Harvey and Michael Thomas Zanetti. The elections superintendent ruled this week that candidate Olivia Ware is not qualified to run based on discrepancies in her voter registration record and her residency within the city limits and that her name should be stricken from the ballot or a notice placed at polling places advertising her disqualification. Any votes for Ware will not be counted.

In Newton County, advance voting for the Covington Municipal Election takes place from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Newton County Board of Elections at the Newton County Administration Building at 1113 Usher St. Incumbent Chris Smith is facing Maurice Carter in the Post 1, East Ward race.

While voters can register to vote in the Mansfield election at the Board of Elections office, they will have to advance vote in Mansfield. The city clerk did not provide early voting information by deadline. For more information, contact Mansfield City Hall at 770-786-7235. Mansfield is the only other municipality in Newton with a contested council race. Larry Cummins and Lisa Dunn are facing off in the Post 4 race.

Both Newton and Rockdale officials are expecting light turnout for early voting and on election day. Rockdale Elections Supervisor Cynthia Welch predicted a 15 percent turnout of the county’s 47,063 active voters. The city of Conyers has 6,388 active voters.

According to Newton Elections Director Donna Morrison, there are 6,336 active registered voters in the city of Covington and 202 in Mansfield.

Voters can also request absentee ballots by mail. Ballots will be mailed Oct. 14 through Nov. 1.

Eligible voters who wish to vote by mail should mail or fax a written request for an absentee ballot that includes name and address, date of birth, election name and date, address where ballot is to be mailed, daytime telephone number and email address and voter’s signature. The deadline for returning absentee ballots is no later than 7 p.m. on Election Day.
