Dax Willette had another excellent weekend for the Rockdale cross country team.
The freshman finished third at the Battle of Atlanta, running in 16:25.04 at the Nash Farms Battlefield in Hampton.
Willette’s time, which helped Rockdale finish eighth as a team, was also good enough to meet the national silver standard and qualify Willette as a national elite.
In a race of 285 finishers, Rockdale had another top-50 finisher as sophomore Logan Hull was 34th at 17:55.61.
Rockdale runner-up again in volleyball
The Rockdale volleyball team came up a little short Saturday. After a second-place finish at the Collins Hill Classic September 14, the Bulldogs again finished as runner-up in the Harley Davidson Conyers Classic.
Class AAAAAA Rockdale (33-8) lost in two games to No. 7 East Coweta in the championship match of the Gold Bracket, losing 25-17 and 25-11 to the Coweta County school.
Rockdale, playing on its home court as the No. 2 seed, defeated Greenbrier 25-17 and 25-16 in the semi finals to reach the title match against East Coweta, which won all 16 of its games for the tournament, including a victory over Class AAAA No. 5 Veterans in the quarterfinals.
Salem reached the Silver Bracket as the No. 4 seed, but the Seminoles dropped their opening match to Houston County. Unranked Jonesboro defeated Lakeside, Evans in the semi finals and South Effingham in the title match of the silver bracket.
The Heritage softball team dropped a pair of games in non-region play last Friday, losing to Madison County 6-4 in 10 innings and North Oconee 4-3. The Patriots, 18-4 overall, hosted Kell Monday in a game that ended too late for this edition….Rockdale’s softball team was coming off its frost two Region 2-AAAAAA wins over Morrow and Lovejoy by a combined score of 41-10 before coming back down to earth in a 7-5 loss to Newton last week. The Bulldogs, 2-3 in league play, will try to get back to .500 when they host Luella tonight at 5:30 p.m.
