Covington woman killed in one-vehicle crash

COVINGTON — A Covington woman was killed Saturday night in a one-vehicle wreck at the intersection of Flat Shoals Road and Ga. Highway 36.

According to Gordy Wright of the Georgia State Patrol, troopers were called to the accident at about 8:45 p.m. Wright said 21-year-old Cecilia Gonzales from Covington, a passenger in the vehicle, died as a result of injuries she sustained in the accident.

According to Wright, Steven Aguilar, 22, the driver of a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado, was eastbound on Flat Shoals approaching Ga. Highway 36 when his vehicle left the roadway on the right side. Aguilar apparently overcorrected which resulted in the truck traveling back onto the roadway, crossing the westbound lane and north shoulder and hitting a tree with the front passenger side.

Both Aguilar and Gonzales were ejected from the vehicle.

Aguilar was transported to Grady by Newton EMS with serious injuries. Gonzales was transported to Atlanta Medical Center where she died shortly after arrival, according to Wright.

Wright said alcohol will be a contributing factor to the crash and test results and charges are pending.
