COVINGTON — Newton’s softball team gave a heartbreaker away to Salem committing six errors as the Lady Seminoles took a 4-3 win on Wednesday.
“What do you do? I talked about if you’re going to give up six errors you better be sure you hit the ball like crazy. I’m surprised, I though we fixed the error problem,” Newton head coach Virginia Waters said. “But I’ve got some girls that on any given day I’m not sure who’s going to show up. It’s not a region game but when you give them four runs it hurts your heart.”
The Lady Rams also took advantage of some Salem mistakes as Ciara Bryan scored on a Salem error in the bottom of the first giving Newton the lead.
Newton’s lead did not last long. After an error plated Mariah Briney to tie the game in the top of the second, Mikayla Whitfield came across the plate giving the Lady Seminoles the lead.
However, the Lady Rams were not about to give up the game as Bryan had an in-the-park two-run homer in the third s Newton regained the lead.
Following a scoreless fourth inning, Salem’s Kennedy Lester and Alexis Chisman took advantage of two back-to-back errors giving the Lady Seminoles the one-run lead.
The Lady Rams had a couple of chances as Bri Weaver reached the bases in the fifth and Ashton McKinnon reached the bases in sixth. Unfortunately, no one was able to get a hit behind them to drive them home.
Whitney Lester gave up six hits, including Bryan’s home run and an Ashley Weesner double, while striking out two batters in the win.
“It’s kind of crazy because we just played a game (Tuesday) against Apalachee, who’s in our region, and the same thing happened there. Only It was opposite, we were the one’s making mistakes,” Salem head coach Ron Miller said. “Their short stop gave us a lot of chances. We definitely took advantage of that. But we’ll take anything we can get right now, especially going into the playoffs. We have our last region game next week against Gainesville.”
