Eastside goes 3-1 in Morgan County tournament

COVINGTON — Eastside’s softball team prepared for the Region 8-AAAA tournament with going 3-1 in the Morgan County tournament that ended on Saturday.

The Lady Eagles started the tournament on Wednesday with an 8-6 win over Morgan County. After the Athens Christian game was cancelled on Friday, the Eagles went on to go 2-1 in the gold bracket.

Eastside had wins over Alcovy (5-0) and Hart County (6-5) while losing 8-0 to Heritage.

Morgan County jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Lady Eagles came back to tie the game in the second inning. Eastside took the lead on a Madison Whisitt sacrifice fly and a Caitlin Ray double in the fourth.

After Morgan County tied the game in the fifth, Eastside responded with three runs in the home half of the inning to make it 7-4. Eastside added another run in the sixth inning with a Madison Hopper triple. Morgan County tried to get back into the game but Eastside’s defense held them to two runs.

Hopper got the win pitching 4.1 innings giving up seven hits while walking one batter. Ray finished the game pitching 2.2 innings giving up three hits and five walks.

Against Alcovy, Ray showed her dominance in the circle striking out 12 batters while allowing two hits and one walk.

Taz Powell got the Lady Eagles on the scoreboard in the third inning with a solo home run before Ray cleared the bases in the fourth inning with a double.

After losing to Heritage, the Lady Eagles were probably feeling the sting of the shut-out as Hart County took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. But Eastside responded with a two-RBI Brittany Medlin double in the third.

A Molly Moon sacrifice fly in the fourth turned out to be big as Hart County scored in the fifth making it 3-2.

Hart County turned up the pressure taking a 5-3 lead in the top of the seventh. After tying the game, Alexis Dubucio had a game-winning fielder’s choice giving Eastside the win.

Ray and Medlin led the Lady Eagles with four hits in the tournament with Hayle Yates and Ashleigh Williams getting three hits each.

Ray threw for 16.2 innings where she allowed 14 hits, eight walks while fanning 16 batters. Hopper threw for 6.2 where she gave up 13 hits and three walks while Katie Fletcher came in in relief during the Heritage loss throwing 3.2 innings striking out two while giving up two hits and four walks.
