The Heritage softball team is one win away from accomplishing one of their biggest goals of the 2013 season. Kierra Camp didn’t allow an earned run in a complete game effort and the Patriots defeated Winder-Barrow 10-1 Tuesday.
Heritage not only stayed unbeaten at 12-0 and 7-0 in Region 8-AAAAA, but secured at least a No. 2 seed in next month’s region tournament. The Patriots will host Loganville, 5-0 in league play, tonight at 5:55 p.m. with the winner clinching the top seed.
Before that, the Heritage offense got to work against Winder. Heidi Shepherd had the first of her two run-scoring singles and LaKaitlen Barney ripped a two-run single to give Heritage a 3-0 lead in the second. The Patriots added three more in the third, aided by RBI-singles from Camp and Shepherd and Kamryn Toney’s RBI on a suicide squeeze. In the seventh, Carri Wilkerson had a two-run single and the Patriots picked up two more runs on singles by Addy Allegretti and Ta’lor Bynum.
Camp, a Georgia Southern commitment, made good use of the run support, striking out nine and allowing just three hits.
With the chance of clinching an undefeated regular season in the region against the defending league champion Red Devils just two days away, Heritage coach Jason McBay was glad his team didn’t look past Winder Tuesday.
“When you have a big game looming in the future, you can look past an opponent,” McBay said. “That was our goal coming in, to not take Winder lightly. I felt like the girls came ready to play tonight. Now that we took care of them, now we got to get prepared for Thursday.”
Seminoles, Bulldogs also roll to wins
Both Salem and Rockdale had an easy time with their opponents Tuesday. Salem defeated Cedar Shoals 16-0, and the Seminoles, who improved to 3-3 in Region 8-AAAAA, have out-scored their last three opponents by a combined 41-0.
Rockdale snapped a four-game losing streak with a 23-4 victory over Morrow in Region 2-AAAAAA. The Bulldogs had been out-scored 48-17 during the losing streak, but exploded for the most runs in a single game since scoring 18 against Newton last September.
