Anaida “Yayin” Margarita Franco Pabon celebrated her 100th birthday on Sept. 29. She is the daughter of Mario Franco and Ofelia Pabon. She was born in Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico on Sept. 29, 1913. She is the oldest of seven siblings, six of which are still living.
After graduating high school in 1931, she enrolled in Polytechnic Institute (now called Interamerican University) and graduated with a degree in Spanish and minored in history and English.
Anaida married Tomas Torres Frau on Jan. 1, 1941, and moved to Utuado, Puerto Rico. The couple had one son named Carlos Tomas Torres Franco.
Anaida lived in Utuado for the next 60 years. She taught Spanish at first, but switched to teaching English until she retired at the ago of 60. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and knitting.
Since 2010, Anaida has been living in Georgia with her son, Carlos Tomas, and his wife, Norma Lydia Torres. She has three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren in Georgia and South Carolina.
She plans to return to Puerto Rico soon, but in the meantime, she is enjoying her time with her family, friends and her friends at Conyers First United Methodist Church.
